All Emergency Management agencies are working to standardize the way they respond to disasters. Studies have shown that during major events, confusion was created due to the way each individual management agency responded to the event. FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) created an Incident Command System which defines how all agencies respond and work together during an event. Everyone, including volunteers are being asked to take the FEMA courses.
Heart Of Tennessee ARES® members who wish to respond to a disaster event should take the following courses:

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) offers online Independent Study courses through its Emergency Management Institute (EMI). You simply go to the FEMA Web site, select the course you'd like to study, then download it. Take the course at your own speed.
The above courses are mandated by TEMA, county EMA groups and the Red
Cross. You must take them before you will be allowed to work at certain disaster
scenes. Rutherford County EMA (RCEMA) has advised all supporting organizations
that they must have completed and have
record of IS-100 and IS-700 training.
